Wyoming Covered Employment and Wages, Fourth Quarter 2000

Explanation of Increase in Payroll for Mining in Fourth Quarter 2000

Wyoming Unemployment Insurance (UI) employers must report remuneration payable for services from any source including commissions, bonuses and cash.  This includes bonuses, executive pay (an employer pays self), profit distribution, or lump-sum payments paid to employees other than faculty.  The ratio of full-time to part-time workers as well as the number of workers in high-paying and low-paying occupations affects average weekly or annual pay.  When comparing wage and average pay levels, these factors must be taken into consideration.

During the fourth quarter of 2000, Mining (especially in Natrona County in the Central Region) showed a relatively high quarterly average weekly wage related to large bonuses in excess of $75 million that were paid to a small number of employees.  Historically, this is not uncommon. During third quarter 1999, “bonuses, executive pay” in excess of $31.6 million were paid in Teton County in the Finance, Insurance & Real Estate (FIRE) division to small companies.

The following tables, along with normalized data, show the affect of such factors:
