Unemployment Insurance Covered Employment and Wages
for First Quarter 1997

Source: ES-202 Report
Run Date: August 1997
Prepared: 11/19/97 by Nancy Brennan
Text by: Gayle C. Edlin

Monthly employment for the first quarter of 1997 was fairly typical for that time of year; employment remained relatively steady through January and February, and increased slightly in March (see Table 1). Average Monthly Employment for the first quarter of 1997 was 205,344 (see Table 2), up 0.9 percent from the first quarter of 1996. The Services industry showed the largest numerical increase in employees (791); most of that increase was within Health Services. Mining had the second largest numerical increase in employees (554); most of these employees were in the Oil & Gas Extraction industry.

Total Payroll for the first quarter of 1997 was $1,205,685,789 (see Table 2), up 6.0 percent from the first quarter of 1996, and slightly high for this time of year. FIRE (Finance, Insurance, & Real Estate) had the largest percentage change (22.6%) over the year, mostly due to bonuses and executive pay. This increase in Total Payroll was also reflected in an increase in Average Weekly Wage for FIRE (19.8%). Interestingly, while Average Weekly Wage increased for Federal Government over the year (6.6%), Total Payroll was relatively unchanged and Average Monthly Employment actually decreased (-5.8%). This could be explained by the elimination of low-paying jobs in this industry.

Counties with percentage changes in Total Payroll over 10 percent from the first quarter of 1996 to the first quarter of 1997 (see Table 3) were Teton (18.2%), Big Horn (17.1%), Converse (15.7%), Sublette (13.8%) and Lincoln (12.2%).

For Big Horn and Sublette Counties, at least part of these increases were due to carryover from pipeline construction; for Converse, Lincoln and Teton Counties, most of the increases were due to road construction.
