US Consumer Expenditures: Where Does the Money Go?

Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Expenditure Survey, 1992-95
Text by: Gayle C. Edlin

Just as Unemployment Insurance Covered Employment and wages can help us understand where workers' money comes from, the US Consumer Expenditures Survey can help us see how workers spend what they earn1.

The first three columns in the Table show average data for 1993, 1994 and 1995 regarding actual expenditures of survey respondents, and the next two columns indicate how these spending habits have changed from year to year. However, readers may be more familiar with the data presented in the last three columns. These show each category of expenditure as a percent of total expenditures (for example, on average, consumer units* spent 14.0% of total expenditures on food in 1995).

1 The article, "Unemployment Insurance 1996 Annual Average Covered Employment and Wages" discusses information specific to Wyoming, while the table contains average data for the United States.
