May 1997 Trends:

Despite employment growth of 0.3 percent in the Local Area Unemployment Statistics estimates and 0.8 percent in the Nonagricultural Wage & Salary Employment establishment survey, Wyoming's labor force shrank slightly over the year (see LAUS estimates). This suggests that workers are either dropping out of the labor force or leaving the state because of the lack of viable employment opportunities. Also, for the first time since April 1994, Wyoming's unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) has been the same as or higher than the U.S. rate for two months in a row. --DB
