The Research & Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services reported today that from first quarter 2015 to first quarter 2016 total unemployment insurance (UI) covered payroll decreased by $243.5 million (-7.6%). Employment fell by 9,367 jobs (-3.4%) and average weekly wage decreased by $39 (-4.3%). As in previous quarters, the largest job losses occurred in the mining sector (including oil & gas; 6,092 jobs, or –23.0%). Analysts have noted that “minerals related employment is one of the key predictors of sales and use tax revenue” in Wyoming (CREG, 2010).
