Job Description
Dispatchers answer and dispatch emergency calls via law enforcement and emergency tele-communications equipment.

Requirements

  1. Must be a United States citizen.
  2. Must be of majority age.
  3. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  4. Must pass a background investigation.
  5. Must be free of physical, medical, and emotional problems.
  6. Must pass an oral interview.
  7. All Wyoming Dispatchers must attend a Commission-approved academy for basic training within two years of being hired.


Restrictions

Candidates may not have been convicted of a felony.
An extensive background check is done before someone is hired.
Must meet the continuing education hours mandated for recertification. (20 C.E.U.)

Initial Basic Class:
        Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy - Douglas
Continuing Education:
        These requirements are often done in-house where the dispatcher is employed. These requirements can also be met by taking approved course work at the colleges throughout the state or at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy.

License
Dispatchers need to obtain Wyoming Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification administered by the Wyoming P.O.S.T. Commission.

Examination
The Communications Personnel basic course is offered twice per year. Contact the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy at 307-358-3617 for exact dates.
