CES Employment, LAUS Employment and CPS Population
The Figure, which has appeared in several of the past issues of Wyoming Labor Force Trends, illustrates the two employment series--the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) and the Current Employment Statistics (CES)--produced in cooperation with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The LAUS employment series is derived from a monthly household survey of Wyoming residents and is an estimate of the number of employed individuals in the state. The CES series is based on a sample survey of Wyoming employers, and is an estimate of the number of nonagricultural jobs in the state.
For more information on the differences between the two series, see "Understanding the Different Employment Measures" by Mike Evans in the April 1998 issue of Trends.
The Current Population Survey (CPS) population is included for comparison with the two employment series. The CPS is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau every month.
