Wage Record Summary Statistics UPDATE

Data Provided by: Brett Judd

This month Research & Planning added new information to the wage record summary statistics and changed the way some of the statistics are calculated. We added a category for pseudo Social Security Numbers (SSN’s) in each quarter starting with first quarter 1995. When the quarterly reports from employers are entered into the computer, pseudo SSN’s are used when an employer doesn’t report an employee’s social security number. Some of these pseudo SSN’s (that start with 000) contain wages for more than one individual. The purpose of separating the pseudo SSN’s and the wages associated with them is to keep these numbers from skewing the mean wages of real SSN’s.

We also changed the way we calculate the Total Wages for one job, two jobs, etc. Previously, the Total Wages for one job were the total wages for each person’s first job, regardless if they were working one, two, three, or more jobs. Now the Total Wages for one job only include the wages earned by people who only worked one job. This changes the Mean Wages per Quarter. Now the Mean Wage per Quarter for one job is the average wage of people who only worked one job. Similarly, the Mean Wage per Quarter for two jobs is the average total wages of those individuals who worked two jobs. It is interesting that as the number of jobs worked increases, the average quarterly wage falls. There are several possible explanations for this phenomenon: People could be people moving from one job to another or it could also reflect the idea that people who have a relatively high paying first job don’t feel the need to work a second or third job.

A third change is the way the 92 Participation is figured for the annual average. 92 Participation was first included in the wage records download that appeared in the August issue of Trends. It shows how many of the 267,453 people who worked sometime in 1992 were still working in the quarter in question. In the August issue the 1995 annual average 92 Participation was 147,069, but this was actually the fourth quarter 1995 92 Participation. For the annual averages, we decided to count anyone who worked at all during the entire year. By using this new method, we found 174,370 people who worked in 1992 working sometime during 1995.

As usual, the tables also show changes that have been made to the wage record database since the end of June (the end of the second quarter of 1996). Data for the first quarter of 1995 has just become finalized and the other quarters have also been adjusted. For a detailed explanation of wage records, refer to the May 1995 issue of Trends.
