It has been one year since wage record summary statistics were first published in Wyoming Labor Force TRENDS. The information in this issue shows changes that have been made to the wage record database since the end of December (the end of the fourth quarter of 1995). See: "Wyoming Unemployment Insurance Wage Record Summary Statistics Update" in the February 1996 issue of TRENDS. Data for the third quarter of 1994 has just become finalized and the other quarters presented here have been adjusted. For a detailed explanation, see wage records, in the May 1995 issue of TRENDS.

For the first time in wage record history, the current quarter did not maintain an upward trend in comparison with the prior year's data. That is, for the first time since first quarter 1992, comparing the most recent quarter's wage record data (fourth quarter 1995) with data from one year previous (fourth quarter 1994), total jobs, total number of Social Security Numbers (SSN's) and total wages all decreased. Total jobs went down by nearly 9,000; total SSN's decreased by about 6,000; and total wages declined by almost $13 million.
The slowdown of new SSN's appears to be continuing also; new SSN's is an indication of new people entering Wyoming's labor force. From 1994 to 1995, new SSN's decreased by almost 7,000.
Analysis shows that many workers were lost from the Oil and Gas Extraction industry. Nearly as many were lost from government, probably due to "election officials", which were included in Local Government during the 1994 election year. We can expect this phenomenon to occur again in the fourth quarter of 1996 due to the presidential election.
The evidence indicates that a plateau may be occurring in Wyoming's economy, however, data are not yet available to indicate a downturn. Future information will add to our understanding of how to interpret this data.
