First Quarter 1994 Covered Employment and Wages Released

by: Nancy Brennan

Stronger than anticipated growth occurred in the first quarter 1994 covered employment and wages. Average monthly employment grew by 7,085 jobs (3.7%) when compared with the same time period in 1993. Total payroll grew by $68.8 million (6.9%). The first quarter 1994 average weekly wage of $415 increased $12 per week (3.1%) over the same period in 1993.

Major industries exhibiting job and wage growth were services, retail trade, and construction. Employment in Transportation and State and Local government declined. Mild weather conditions during the first quarter 1994 were a major contributing factor to more jobs and higher payroll.

Different industries are responding to an increasingly robust economic environment in different ways. The Construction industry is adding employment (+15.2%) with the total payroll expanding at a comparable rate (+17.2%). In Manufacturing, on the other hand, employment has grown at a much more modest rate (+3%) while the average weekly wage grew by five percent whereas the existing employee appear to be expanding the number of hours they work. Additional pay without adding more workers can also be influenced by bonuses or salary increases. Most average weekly wage changes did not keep up with the rate of inflation.

Albany, Campbell, Teton, Park, Natrona, and Laramie Counties exhibited significant employment and total payroll growth. Even though these counties have unique industrial bases, Services, Retail Trade, and Local Government are fibers displaying increased job and wage growth. Only Crook and Platte showed decreased employment.
