A statewide annual employment growth near two percent was evident in both the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) and the Current Employment Statistics (CES) programs for January. The seasonal drop in 1993 was not as pronounced from previous years. The December 1992 to December 1993 growth of almost two percent was actually outside of the MSA’s.

Industries which exhibited growth from the prior year in December were oil & gas extraction (+700), retail trade (+1,000) especially in eating & drinking places (+700), and health services (+600). State government (-200) and coal mining (-200) were industries which showed declines in comparison to the prior year in December. Heavy construction seasonally declined by 500 jobs in November 1993 to December 1993. No seasonal increase was indicated by the trend.

Teton, Laramie, Sweetwater, and Sheridan counties exhibited significant annual employment growth calculated by the LAUS program.

December’s unemployment rate of 5.2 percent seasonally rose from November and about the same as last year, 4.6 and 5.1 per cent respectively. The statewide rate when seasonally adjusted was at 5.1 percent compared to the national seasonally adjusted rate of 6.4 per cent. Albany (2.7%), Teton (2.9%), and Niobrara (2.9%) counties had the lowest unemployment rate. Once again Uinta had the highest at 7.1 percent.
